Celebrity Pornography in China
By William Koch
Edison Chen, a Chinese Canadian actor and pop star who lives in Hong Kong, left his MacBook at a repair shop in January, with hundreds of explicit pictures of himself and eight female Chinese pop stars on the hard drive. Not surprisingly, the pictures ended up on the Internet, and by Valentine’s Day there was a total of 467 pictures floating around.

When the celebrity obsessed people of China found out about the pictures, so many people were searching for them that it crashed servers all over China. Pornography is illegal in China, and the government is attempting to crack down on this ordeal in everyway possible, from blocking sites to tracking people. However, it has still been a test for the government censors. Edison Chen has since taken an indefinite hiatus from his career in Hong Kong, and the other pop stars’ careers are in question. The tribulation has caused the celebrities a lot of embarrassment.
On February 20, ten people were arrested in Shenzhen, China in connection with the scandal. They are accused of copying and distributing the pornography. Four have been released on bail. The case has brought up many issues with privacy laws in the country; currently there are none, giving Chen no protection. However, he is pushing for a change in the system.
