YouTube and Pakistan
By William Koch
According to the BBC, On February 24 YouTube was blocked worldwide for two hours.
The problem started in Pakistan when the government blocked the site because of an anti-Islamic video featuring a Dutch lawyer.
Pakistan’s telecommunications company Telecom, an independent company, managed to send out instructions to the global Internet that it was the legitimate YouTube site.

The company was instructed by the government to block the site, but only within the country. Pakistan’s Telecom gets its Internet from a company in Hong Kong, PCCW, and they did not stop the signal, which companies in the US and Europe usually do.
After the site was down for two hours, YouTube contacted PCCW and got the site back up. These things happen all of the time, just not on this level. Incidents like this make us wonder how safe the Internet really is. Pakistan’s government claims that it was not intentional, but if someone has bad intentions, real harm might be able to be done.
