France Sends Optical Data 1,500 Miles at 16.4 Tbps
By William Koch
According to TechRadar.com, France recently managed to send information 1,500 miles at 16.4 terabits per second over a wire.
This blows Japan’s new Internet satellite project out of the water, which can send information at 1.2 Gigabytes per second, although one is through an optical wire and one is through a satellite.
To put this in perspective, with speeds like this, you could theoretically download 100 HD movies in one second. These speeds won’t be available to consumers anytime soon, but the fact that the technology even exists is pretty amazing, no matter how complicated the process.
Gizmondo states that the technology will be used to help the Internet’s backbone; in other words, it will make the Internet as a whole run faster around the world. However, this technology is getting better and better all the time and users can already download things at incredible speeds if they have the right connection. Still, downloading 100 HD movies in less than a second would be great.
