Adobe recently announced that they are going to start making hardware that is as technologically savvy as their software. They are currently developing a camera lens that is capable of taking 19 different depths of field images with one shutter release.
The lens works by taking light from various angles all at once. With the depth of field information from a variety of angles, you can then use computer programs like Adobe Photoshop to shift your image from side to side and also change your focal length, bringing into focus areas in the foreground and/or background that were out of focus in the original capture.
For those of you anxiously awaiting 3D image capture, your day is around the corner. Abode has currently only built a prototype to demonstrate its software, but commercial versions could arrive in a few years.
